The New Black Vanguard: Photography between Art and Fashion

Micaiah Carter, Adeline in Barrettes, 2018.

The 15 young, international, and emerging Black photographers in this exhibition blur traditional lines between art and fashion and where each is displayed. See over 100 vibrant portraits, conceptual images and gorgeous fashion editorial photographs curated from traditional lifestyle magazines, ad campaigns, museums, and individual social media channels.

Although the work of this New Black Vanguard now appears on the covers of mainstream fashion magazines, these artists started out by taking informal pictures of their friends, family members, unknown black models, strangers cast from the street and social media. The images expand the roles of the black body and black lives as subject matter; collectively, they celebrate black creativity and the cross-pollination between art, fashion, and culture.

The exhibition is curated by writer and critic Antwaun Sargent
